On Thursday September 19th, 2013 Fenn Varsity Soccer took the field for their first game of the season against rival CCHS (Concord Carlisle High School). Last year, the Fenn boys team capped off a remarkable win at the Eaglebrook Soccer tournament held annually at the Eaglebrook School. So coming into this years season the boys have high standards for themselves.
The Reynolds Field as the boys call it, is a gorgeous turf field at the Fenn School used for playing soccer, lacrosse and football. And that's where the Fenn Varsity Soccer team began their season. As the game started Fenn made sure that they were the dominating team. With majority of the possession the team was able to get some close chances to score but they were not able to capitalize on them.
And so the half ended zero-zero, which in some ways was a disappointment because Fenn had so many chances but on the other hand everyone on the team knew this was their game to win.
For thirty seasons Fenn has been so grateful to be coached under the legend, Bob Starensier or Star as kids call him. His love for the game of soccer which can sometimes be crazy and his ability to be resilient when loosing is what makes him such a loving and phenomenal coach. And at half time he gave his usual pump up speech to the team and got them fired up for the next half. I am not sure what Star said during the half time but the Fenn team came out fierce and strong.
With twenty five minutes left in the game, a player on CCHS touched the ball with his hand in the penalty box and gave Fenn a PK. Walker Davey (8th grader) stepped up to the spot, his whole body calm and relaxed.
He waited for the whistle to blow and with one tremendous shot, he put the ball in the top right corner of the goal where the goalie had no chance of saving it. Fenn was up 1-0.
The team never looked back again.
Just seven minutes after Walker's goal, Matt Killian (9th grade) shot the ball just outside the 18 yard box and buried into the bottom left corner of the goal. 2-0 Fenn.
Just a few minutes after Fenn pulled away, Matt Killian again shot the ball outside the box and put it back into the goal. 3-0 Fenn.
And finally to finish the game off, Thatcher Adams IIII (9th grade) had a gorgeous goal after a pass from Kevin Kelleher (8th grade). Fenn went on to win the game 4-0 and as kids usually say during All School Meeting, "it was a good game by all." Leo Kafka (9th grade) came ready to protect the net that day as CCHS only had three shots and all of them were saves by the young goalie.
As Star says in his pregame chant "you play for each other, not yourselves but for every single one on this team" it was obvious that the Fenn boys play for their teammates.
